A long-awaited first test of a vaccine against dengue fever has failed to consistently prevent the viral disease in children, researchers report online September 11 in the Lancet. The mixed results have left scientists wondering how one form of the virus dodged what looked like a potent immunization regimen.

The shaky showing in Thai children won’t send scientists back to the drawing board, since the vaccine is already being tested extensively elsewhere. Officials at vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur even point out that the vaccine engendered respectable defense, protecting against three of the four viral subtypes of dengue in 61 to 90 percent of vaccinated children.
But the vaccine failed to fend off one subtype of dengue, called dengue serotype 2. That subtype is common in the region of Thailand where the trial was conducted. What’s more, the specific version of the dengue subtype 2 in that area turned out to be particularly aggressive, says study coauthor Nadia Tornieporth, a physician and head of global clinical research at Sanofi Pasteur U.S. headquarters in Swiftwater, Pa.
“This trial is a cautionary tale for investigators designing future dengue vaccine trials,” says Scott Halstead, a physician at the International Vaccine Institute in Seoul, Korea, writing in the same issue of Lancet. Most of the children in the study had previous exposure to a dengue subtype or a related virus, a situation that makes it difficult to establish the effectiveness of the new vaccine, he says.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue affects 50 million to 100 million people globally each year, with 500,000 needing hospitalization.
To elicit an immune reaction, the vaccine uses a yellow fever vaccine as a platform for ferrying viral proteins from the four dengue subtypes. The vaccine had previously generated ample neutralizing antibodies in people, Halstead says. The version of dengue serotype 2 virus circulating in Thailand might have evaded these antibodies, he suggests, or the vaccine might have failed to generate balanced immune responses to all four subtypes of dengue.
The researchers enrolled 4,002 children ages 4 to 11 in the study. The kids were randomly assigned to get three shots spaced over one year — either three doses of the dengue vaccine or one shot of a rabies vaccine and two placebo shots. In all, 2,452 children got three shots and full follow-up tests, while 1,221 got the control shots.
The researchers diagnosed 134 dengue infections in all children in the study over two years. Dengue serotype 2 caused three-fifths of the infections. “We were surprised when we saw there was no protection against this particular dengue serotype,” Tornieporth says.
Overall, 2.8 percent of the vaccinated children and 4.4 percent of the controls came down with dengue fever, a difference too small to establish a benefit. Five children contracted severe dengue — two who got the vaccine and three controls — but all recovered fully.
Questions arising from these mixed results will probably be answered in 2014 when Sanofi Pasteur releases findings from an ongoing trial of the same vaccine in more than 30,000 children and teenagers in 10 countries, Tornieporth says.

Internet Security is Panda Security’s mid-range product that combines all anti-malware layers of protection produced by the company, but lacks the modules for PC optimization, file encryption, file shredding and password management.

Besides the antivirus, it incorporates a two-way firewall, identity protection, anti-spam and parental controls.

Additionally, it can install USB Vaccine, a tool that blocks infections propagating through autorun.inf on USB drives, and Safe Browser, which is a virtualized browser that allows you to conduct sensitive financial operations online.

The 2013 edition of Panda Internet Security introduces a new scan manager, which is designed to increase the file processing speed by up to 70% by leveraging system resources and kicking in only when necessary.

Part of the protection is based on cloud knowledge, which is why the 2013 is touted as reaching the user faster, thus contributing to keeping the newest pieces of malware at bay.

Looks have also been tweaked to offer users easier access to modules and advanced options intuitively hidden for the more seasoned user, putting simplicity and ease of use first. Also, the menus have been turned into tiles making the bundle suitable for use on Windows 8 touch interface.

The Political Machine 2012 allows players to set the amount of weeks for each of their game/campaign and I’m here to tell you that you should always opt for the longer games, even if some weird events will take place after about one third of the time passes.

Some of the elements of the game remain the same regardless of the length of the game, including the two big tabs that have a great effect on the outcome: Operatives and Endorsements.

The first one allows gamers to get a number of well-trained political operatives who are able to perform clearly defined tasks, like increasing overall presence in the state, getting better results out of media campaign or eliminating one of the operatives that the other side uses.

The Endorsements tab is also crucial because the various organizations that can be lured to the side of one candidate or another can boost some problematic areas or can make an already existing advantage even more important.

When setting up a short game it’s crucial to quickly pluck down specialized HQs to create both operatives and get the endorsements that your candidate needs as fast as possible, especially because play time is limited.

I thought that the situation would change in long games, where there’s more time to play around and endorsement accumulation is somewhat slowed down (at least that was my experience with the previous installment of The Political Machine).

But a weird thing seems to happen in longer games: my computer-controlled opponent always uses a short game approach, gets too many endorsement points and then captures all the big organizations, even if it makes little sense for the Worker’s Unions to actually support the Republican candidate.

So, my advice is this: if you plan to set up a long game, don’t forget to get your core endorsements fast, because the A.I. is ruthless when it comes to them.
Canadian carrier Bell has just confirmed it would offer customers two Windows Phone 8 devices by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, Nokia fans will be disappointed to know that Bell has no intention of offering the Finnish company's new flagship smartphone, the Lumia 920.

However, there's a high chance that the Canadian carrier will launch the other Windows Phone 8 announced by Nokia earlier this month, the Lumia 820.

For the time being, the identity of the second Windows Phone 8 offered by Bell is a mystery, but it will probably release Samsung's recently announced ATIV S, or perhaps it will carry one of HTC's upcoming smartphones.

It will be interesting to see which of the other handset manufacturers will support Windows Phone 8 launch with their devices, but for the moment only Nokia, Samsung and HTC revealed plans to release smartphones powered by Microsoft's latest mobile operating system.

The only information revealed by Bell is the fact that it won't offer the Lumia 920 once Windows Phone 8 get officially released in Canada:

“Bell will be supporting the Windows Phone 8 release in Canada with two new devices from leading manufacturers. At this time we are not planning to carry the Nokia Lumia 920.”

The statement above is signed by one of President of Bell Mobility Wade Oosterman's assistants and was sent to a customer who asked for additional info regarding Bell's plans for Windows Phone 8.

Hopefully, this doesn't mean that Bell will never launch Nokia's flagship smartphone and that the carrier's customers will eventually be able to purchase the Lumia 920 early next year.

In this regard, Nokia and Samsung confirmed their Windows Phone 8 products would arrive in Canada “in the coming months,” which means sooner or later fans of Microsoft's platform will be able to get their favorite devices.
Last year, Nokia announced plans to departure from the Symbian platform it has been long using and to adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone as its primary operating system for smartphones.

It has already registered a bit of success with its strategy, yet many are still wondering what would have happened if it had chosen another path, one that would have involved the launch of Android smartphones.

Many users are still considering Android as a great option for Nokia, and designer Bob Freking is one of them.

For that, he came up with a new concept phone that packs a PureView photo snapper and a PureMotion HD display, the same as Lumia 920, but which runs under Android: the Nokia Nexus Spark.

The hardware specifications for this device are as impressive as its name suggests, starting with the 4.8-inch touchscreen with Gorilla Glass protection and going all the way to the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor that powers it.

The concept phone also sports a 41-megapixel photo snapper on the back, the same as Nokia’s already available 808 PureView smartphone does.

Moreover, Nexus Spark comes with a 3,400 mAh battery packed inside, is 14 mm thick, and runs under Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

The phone seems rather bulky, which suggests it could be an older concept from the designer, yet it still features a variety of Lumia 800/N9 elements that make it resemble some of the past Galaxy Note 2 mockups, concept-phones suggests.

One way or the other, it’s still interesting to see what a union between Nokia and Google’s Android operating system might look like.

Nokia is expected to benefit from increased success with its upcoming Windows Phone 8 handsets, which makes it rather unlikely for it to drop support for Microsoft’s platform and move to Android, but enthusiasts can still hope for that to happen someday.
Microsoft clearly surprised most of the users with the new initially-called Metro UI, mostly because some of the traditional Windows elements were completely
missing.

Aside from the classic Start Menu that allowed users to quickly access the installed apps and the other built-in utilities, Windows 8 lacks a quick way to turn off the computer or simply reboot it.

If you’re not a tech-savvy time, discovering the best way to shut down the computer could take some time, so installing a third-party app to handle the job may sound like the best idea.

There are lots of apps developed with this goal in mind and clicking this link gets to our dedicated Windows software category created in this regard.

This application for example is called PowerMode and places an icon in the Windows System Tray, letting you access the main power options with just one click.

Simply download and install it, all options will be at a one-click distance. Remember to place a shortcut in the Windows Startup folder to run it at Windows boot.

Basically, shutting down or rebooting Windows 8 comes to do more than a couple of clicks. You need to open the previously-called Metro UI, click on the user icon in the top right corner and hit “Sign Out”. After that, the dedicated power button gives you the option to either restart or shut down the system.

Signing out of your account can also be made by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and hitting the “Sign Out” option. After that, you are allowed to access the standard options to reboot and shut down the machine.

Another way to do it also relies on the “Metro” GUI. Launch it and move the mouse cursor over the “Zoom” icon in the bottom right corner. The so-called Charms bar brings up multiple icons, such as Search, Share and Start, but also a Settings option hiding a “Power” menu. This one lets you sleep, restart and shut down the computer in a second.

The last and probably the simplest way to do it is by pressing… err… ALT + F4 on the desktop. The traditional app closing shortcut still works, but only a few people actually consider it. So simply use this key combination to power off your system in a second.
